The hallmark of this monumental mosque, built from red sandstone and white marble, are broad flight of steps that are topped by huge arched gateways. The eastern gate depicted here faces the equally imposing Lal Qila (Red Fort), the official residence of the Mughal Emperor's.
William Daniell and his uncle Thomas were the first professional British landscape artists to visit Delhi, the capital of Mughal India. They reached Delhi on 16th February 1789 and remained there until 6th March. They returned to London in September 1794 and immediately set to work on a series of 144 aquatints, which they called Oriental Scenery and, which were published initially as pairs or small groups between 1795 and 1808. Technically they were of great merit and their subject matter also aroused great interest.
