Painted by Bishandas with portraits by Nanha. Right panel of a two-part illustration to the Baburnama, circa 1590. The strips of text point out that the pool surrounded by a clover meadow and orange and pomegranate trees was the best place in the garden.

Babur the founder of the Mughal dynasty in India, created gardens (bagh's) wherever he went. Here we see him in the process of laying out his favorite garden, the Bagh-i-wafa (Garden of Fidelity), which he created outside Kabul in 1508-09.  The Iranian char bagh design in which, waterways and pathways intersecting at right angles, create 'char' (meaning 'four') flowerbeds, paved walkways, platforms, and pools, is clearly illustrated in this painting.
