Carlyle’s presentation of the life of Prophet Muhammad in a very positive way stands as a very clear, concise, knowledgeable and fair account. For him the Prophet was a genuine man of insight, a great leader, a devout and humble man, yet the truth of his religion was ‘embedded in a portentous error and falsehood.’ But Carlyle gave Islam the highest accolade when he went so far as to state that Islam was ‘properly the soul of Christianity.
