Mughal prince Dara Shikoh (1592-1666), son of Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, is a neglected character from medieval Indian history. Dara was a committed patron of the fine arts, and music. He befriended Hindus, Sikhs and Christians and devoted much effort towards exploring commonalities between Islam and Hinduism. To this end Dara commissioned the translation of the Upanishads from their original Sanskrit into Persian.
