The setting is the Diwan-e-Aam (audience hall) inside the Lahore Fort, in present day Pakistan. Prince Awrangzeb is shown being embraced by his father Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal. His three brothers and their elderly grandfather Asaf Khan stand in attendance at the upper level. The eldest brother Prince Dara Shikoh, is on the left. Prince Shah Shujah and prince Muradbaksh are standing to the left of Shah Jahan.
The darbar (court) scene carefully documents an actual historical event; the visit of Prince Awrangzeb, then governor of the Mughal territories in the Deccan, to the Imperial Court, which was then residing at Lahore. The figures are precisely drawn and placed according to court protocol. Attention has been paid to the tiniest detail.
