In his memoir s (the Jahangirnama), Mughal Emperor Jahangirdescribes a seven day hunt in the December of 1611, during the course of which917 antelope were hunted:

"Of the 641 bucks and does that were captured alive, 404were sent to Fatehpur to be set loose on the polo field (and he) ordered another84 to have silver rings put in their noses and be released on that samefield."

The fine specimen portrayed here does not have a silver ring inhis nose, but his regal attire certainly indicates that he is part of a noble orroyal menagerie: he

sports a matching bridle and collar, a large gold tassel hangingfrom the bridle and a smaller one from the collar, with the collar also adornedwith small gold bells.

The animal itself is beautifully rendered, in particular the silky smoothnessof its hide; the ever so slightly haughty expression that the artist has givenhim befits such a fine beast. The golden sky and the flower-strewn ground onwhich he stands add the perfect touch of sweetness to complete the pictureof an obviously pampered animal.
