Lion hunts, have been a favorite royal pastime in Western Asiaever since Assyrian times. Traditionally the character and courage of a princeand hence his fitness for high office, were measured by the skill, endurance andbravery he demonstrated on the hunt.
In this dynamic miniature painting the prince and his attendantsare shown in profile, recalling the court protocol of Shah Jahan, wheredepiction in profile was a sign of high rank. A nimbus and the elaboratelydecorated barrel of his musket indicate his pre-eminence.
The highly modeled figures of the elephants and the details of their finetrappings contrast oddly with the featureless background, which almost cuts outthe horizon.
