Attired in courtly garments and and wearing an elaborate turban, the painter is seated on the ground while working on a full length figure. This portrait is a mirror image of a painting made in the Ottoman Court during the 1480's, which itself was based on a painting made by the famous Italian painter; Gentile Bellini. Both the Ottoman and the Mughal copies contain the spurious attribution to "Behzad" placed in the lower left.

The intense, gem like coloring of Islamic miniature paintings, so evident in this work, is no accident. Mughal artists used paints derived from rare and precious minerals, such as powdered lapis lazuli. Streams of water were painted with pure silver pigment and star like flecks cut out of beaten gold foil were scattered on the margins.
