The delivery of sachik presents to the bride's house for Prince Dara Shikoh's wedding. RIGHT half of a double page composition. Painted around 1635 by Bishandas, an artist who worked for three Emperor's of the Mughal dynasty in India; Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. The procession is shown moving along one bank of the Yumuna river in Agra. No amount of verbal detail can equal the direct visual awareness of pomp and ceremony, and of luxurious life, with which the painter has invested the scene.
The wedding of Prince Dara Shikoh, whom Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, favored as his successor was performed with exceptional splendor. Marriage alliances within the imperial family were arranged within a very small circle. This ceremony united Prince Dara Shikoh with Nadira Banu Begum. Her father was Sultan Parvez, Shah Jahan's elder brother, and her mother was Jahan Banu begum, daughter of Prince Murad (the brother of Jahangir and therefore Parvez's uncle). Bride and groom were thus both grandchildren of Jahangir.
